Divemaster

As a Divemaster

You will have attained the first professional membership rating.

Becoming a Divemaster allows you to:

  • Work on live-aboard dive boats and at resort locations.
  • Assist PADI Instructors with classes.
  • Lead PADI scuba divers on guided tours.
  • Conduct the PADI Discover Local Diving Experience and the Scuba Review program.

Pre requisites:

You must be prepared to take on responsibility for others; be 18 years or over; have 20 logged dives prior to the start of the course.

Overview

The PADI Divemaster Course is divided into several sections :

Academic training these begin with self study of the Diving Knowledge Workbook (you will need a copy of the Diving Encyclopaedia) and will include Instructor presentations.

Modules covered in this course:

  • Course introduction.
  • Supervising general diving activities for certified divers.
  • Assisting with student training.
  • Dive theory introduction.
  • Physics of diving.
  • Physiology of diving.
  • Dive equipment.
  • Decompression theory and the RDP.
  • Divemaster conducted programs.
  • Risk management.
  • Business of diving.
  • Your diving career.

Confined water training takes place in an indoor swimming pool where you will perform skills related to:

  • Stamina assessment and development Swim 400 metres non-stop, with no swimming aids.
  • Tread water for 15 minutes of which the final two must be done with your hands out of the water.
  • Using mask, snorkel, fins with no buoyancy aids, swim non-stop for 800 metres keeping your head in the water and without using your arms.
  • In full scuba gear, push or tow an inert diving in full gear at the surface 100 metres non-stop.

Diver rescue assessment and development

Execute an effective simulated rescue of a non-responsive, non-breathing diver at the surface.

Confined water skill assessment and development

Execute skill of removing, replacing and clearing your mask Execute 18 basic scuba skills.

Practical Application

  • Exchange scuba equipment underwater with a buddy whilst buddy breathing.
  • Give an effective briefing and debriefing and conduct activities for a PADI Program that may be conducted entirely by a PADI Divemaster.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage a group of divers effectively.

Also:

  • a) responding to, locating and surfacing, transporting and egressing a non-breathing diver.
  • b) putting into action appropriate first aid, site control and summoning medical assistance for that diver.

Open Water Training allows you to demonstrate your mastery of these skills and practice them in a typical diving situation.

Practical Application

  • With a buddy, survey a dive site, including underwater and surface features.
  • Create a map of the dive site and include underwater relief, points of interest, entry and exit points, local facilities and potential hazards.

Internship Participation

Divemasters will participate in the roles they will have once they are certified assistants. This will be accomplished under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor during various PADI courses.

Course Schedule

Academic Training takes place in Peacehaven, near Brighton.

The academic sessions are divided into twelve modules. At the end of each, is a ten question multi choice mini quiz and a knowledge review, both of which have to be completed before proceeding to the next module.

Confined Training takes place at one of many swimming pools in the Surrey & Sussex area.

Open Water dives are conducted at inland sites or weather permitting on the south coast in Brighton.
